COURSE DESCRIPTION :

This course focuses on the interplay between Neurodynamics and the Movement system. The emphasis of this lecture is for the participant to navigate the intersection at which Neurodynamics and Movement come together and which path clinically to venture to best meet the needs of their patient. The course will examine elements of the movement exam from developmental kinesiology and movement systems approaches while also assessing Neurodynamics elements.

Course Objectives - Upon completion of the course, the clinician will be able to :

  1. Apply when to utilize Neurodynamics interventions vs Movement or developmental approaches for treatment of nerve conditions in the upper extremity/shoulder.

  2. Integrate both Movement and Neurodynamic assessments into their examination of patients with nerve related issues in the upper extremity / shoulder.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Clare Frank, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, is a clinical instructor for the Spine Rehabilitation Fellowship program at Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles, and the director of Azusa Pacific’s Postprofessional Clinical Fellowship in Movement and Performance. She is the founder of Movement Links, a company focused on empowering and inspiring rehab professionals on the movement approach. She was part of the medical team for the 2009 World Figure Skating Championships in Los Angeles, and has been on the injury prevention and rehabilitation team for the National Training Center in Beijing, China, since 2010. Frank is a certified instructor for Janda’s Approach to Musculoskeletal Pain Syndromes, and Kolar’s Approach to Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization. She has presented at state and national conferences, teaches in the U.S. and internationally, and co-authored Assessment and Treatment of Muscle Imbalance: The Janda Approach (Human Kinetics, 2010). Her clinical career has been greatly influenced by Shirley Sahrmann, PT, Ph.D., and the Prague School of Manual Medicine faculty, namely the late Vladimir Janda, MD, D.Sc., the late Karel Lewit, MD, and Pavel Kolar, PT, Ph.D. She completed the Kaiser Permanente orthopedic residency program in 1993 while working on her master’s degree.

Michael Shacklock DipPhysio, MAppScMPT, FACP - Founder of the concept of neurodynamics in physiotherapy/ manual therapy, 1995. Director and Founder of Neurodynamic Solutions (NDS) for the express purpose of disseminating and developing improved knowledge of neurodynamics in clinical practice. He is a Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists (by original contribution, monograph), 2007, under the auspices of the Australian Physiotherapy Association. Michael has been Published in Spine, Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, Physiotherapy (scholarly paper), Australian Journal of Physiotherapy (leading article), & Manual Therapy (editorial and case study), New Zealand Journal of Physiotherapy (invited paper), Grieve’s Modern Manual Therapy, invited contribution, Manuelle Therapie (German), other translated works into Spanish and French. He has also published 2 books - Shacklock M (Ed.) 2007 Biomechanics of the Nervous System: Breig revisited.Neurodynamic Solutions, Adelaide, Australia & Shacklock M 2005 Clinical Neurodynamics: a new system of musculoskeletal treatment, Elsevier, Oxford, successful peer review by Australian College of Physiotherapists (2007)
