• Kendra received her Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2012 from Grand Valley State University (Michigan) and has gone on to receive her board certification in Geriatric Physical Therapy through the APTA.  After learning components of vestibular rehab through mentors, conferences, and coursework;  she completed the renowned Vestibular Rehabilitation: A Competency-Based Course through Duke University.  Years later she has taken this knowledge along with her practical applications and collaborated with multiple disciplines including neurologists, neuro-ophthalmologist, and otolaryngologist to help treat patients with vestibular disorders in multiple settings including acute care, outpatient, and home health for over 10 years.

Course Objectives: 

• Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to identify the following:

• Explain basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system

• Identify different disorders of the vestibular system

• Identify red flags, screening tools and questions, and further indications of when medical management is necessary

• Administer positioning tests to identify posterior and lateral canal canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis

• Administer canalith repositioning maneuvers for posterior and lateral canal canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis

• Perform other important objective tests for complete vestibular assessment and screening

• Ability to identify nystagmus characteristics associated with BPPV variants

• Identify common hang-ups when treating BPPV

Itinerary:

8:30: Introduction and Course Objectives

9:00: Anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system

9:30: Disorders of the vestibular system

10:00: break

10:15: BPPV in-depth (prevalence, characteristics, different canals, canalithiasis vs cupulolithiasis)

11:00: How to conduct and the importance of a good subjective interview

11:30: lecture on objective exam/screening (non-positional testing)

12:00: Lab to practice objective tests including oculomotor exam, cervical screening

12:30: Lunch

1:30: lecture on positional testing for posterior and lateral canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis

2:00: lab on positional testing for posterior and lateral canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis

2:20: break

2:35: Lecture on canalith repositioning maneuvers for posterior and lateral canal canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis

3:00: Lab on canalith repositioning maneuvers for posterior and lateral canal canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis - with practical exam.

3:45: videos to identify nystagmus characteristics

4:15: Trouble-shooting common hang-ups when treating BPPV and a quiz 

5:00: Closing remarks, discussion, question and answer
