Clinical Mastermind with Dr. Clare Frank | Live in Vietnam

Jetset Rooftop Mastermind: We recorded live from a rooftop happy hour at the stunning Banyan Tree resort in Lăng Cô, Vietnam [19:07]. We brought together an incredible interdisciplinary cohort of physical therapists, PTAs, home health specialists, and our faculty mentor, Dr. Clare Frank, to discuss clinical mastery, career longevity, and why bringing your spouse on destination con-ed is a total game-changer [00:50], [07:51], [15:33].

Want to learn advanced biomechanical chains hands-on in world-class relaxation? Secure your spot for our next global destination course—[HERE].

🧠 Key Takeaways & Clinical Mastery Gems:

  • The Power of Early Isometric Loading: Every day a patient spends hurting in rehab without loading is a day they lose critical muscle mass and fascial architecture [21:14], [22:22]. Dr. Clare Frank advocates for utilizing heavy isometric contractions incredibly early in the acute phase to redistribute mechanical stress across bone (Wolff’s Law), cartilage, and ligaments without aggravating joint pain [21:07], [22:51].

  • Exploiting Whole-Body Fascial Slings: Human movement does not occur in isolated unilateral planes. Dr. Frank demonstrates how pairing a standard lower extremity quad set can immediately provide the distal anchoring stability required to maximize thoracic spine rotation by tensioning cross-body myofascial chains [23:29], [24:18].

  • The Orofacial & Visual Integration Loop: The face, jaw, and eyes are completely integrated into the body's baseline core stability systems [26:26]. Elite athletes (like Michael Jordan or LeBron James) instinctively utilize facial grimacing and extreme visual tracking to upregulate neurological tone and maximize physical leverage [26:45], [27:10].

  • The Viral "Vojta Cat Rescue" Story: Dr. Frank details how she cross-applied advanced human rehabilitation concepts to save her dying cat during the COVID shutdowns [30:06]. By mapping feline anatomy against human pathways, she utilized vagal nerve down-regulation to eliminate anxiety, followed by Vojta reflex stimulation points to kickstart diaphragmatic breathwork, and deep visceral manual mobilization to successfully resolve a life-threatening intestinal obstruction [31:05], [32:11].

  • Elevating the PTA Profession: Physical Therapy Assistants (PTAs) are the unsung, MacGyver-like heroes of clinical settings, tasked with managing dozens of conflicting therapist treatment styles daily [09:12], [09:43]. Jetset is officially rolling out PTA-centric destination courses to sharp-focus their visual screening and critical thinking skills [09:05], [10:18].

  • Mastering the Basics Over Cutting Corners: Clinical excellence isn't a mystical gift; it is a product of consistent, high-volume operational "reps" [28:11], [28:27]. True mastery requires executing fundamental assessment tests flawlessly to eliminate operator error before chasing complex modern tools [29:02].

  • Brain Optimization via Strategic Relaxation: The brain integrates and retains advanced clinical concepts exponentially better when immersed in a relaxed, distraction-free environment (the classic Jetset "Stay After Class" philosophy) [37:27], [37:45].

Future of Rehab Continuing Ed | Dr. Benjamin Stevens DC

Jetset Podcast Episode: We sit down with chiropractor, clinical educator, and content creator Dr. Benjamin Stevens to dissect the future of clinical education, overcoming profound neurological injury, and how to successfully navigate the changing landscape of professional development.

Want to master elite hands-on clinical skills at an incredible destination? Explore our upcoming clinical courses—[HERE].

Listen to Dr. Benjamin Stevens discuss the barbell distribution of continuing education, hybrid physical therapy courses, and the power of clinical mentorship.

🧠 Key Clinical & Industry Takeaways:

  • The Barbell Distribution of Continuing Education: Post-COVID, the traditional "weekend hotel course" is evaporating [18:06]. The industry has split into a barbell model: low-cost, asynchronous online learning at one end, and highly human, immersive destination courses and masterminds at the other [18:24].

  • Skill Acquisition & The Feedback Loop: While information-heavy concepts can be taught online wearing a hoodie, true clinical mastership requires a tight, immediate feedback loop [20:55]. Without supervised, in-person practice, hands-on diagnostic palpation and manual therapy skills face a steep generational decline [20:04].

  • The Rise of Hybrid Con-Ed: To respect clinicians' finite time and financial constraints, the future belongs to asynchronous lectures paired with high-intensity, single-day practical labs focusing purely on execution [22:42].

  • Overcoming Severe Neurological Deficits: Dr. Stevens shares his inspiring survival story after contracting severe meningitis (or HACE) in the Bolivian Andes during school, which left him with multi-organ failure and a profound speech and motor impairment that required nearly a decade of rehabilitation to fully master his craft [05:40], [07:12].

  • A Call for Ruthless Mentorship: Young practitioners are navigating unprecedented levels of imposter syndrome and fragmented employment [27:34]. The next generation must be ruthless in pursuing true clinical mentors, and veteran clinicians must view mentoring not as a burden, but as a reciprocal sharpening tool [28:14], [31:17].

  • Humor as an Agent of Change: Dogmatic, polarizing internet commentary forces clinicians to entrench themselves in outdated beliefs [14:11]. Utilizing lighthearted, self-deprecating humor breaks down defensive emotional barriers, opening a healthy dialogue for evidence-based practice changes [12:27].

Clare Frank, Physical Therapist & Dody Chang, Acupuncturist

Jetset Live from Phuket: We sat down for an unprecedented, interdisciplinary roundtable in Thailand with Dr. Clare Frank (DPT) and Dr. Dody Chang (DACM, LAc) to unpack the physiological bridges, structural overlaps, and collaborative future of physical therapy and advanced acupuncture.

Want to experience immersive, collaborative clinical learning at an incredible destination? Explore our upcoming global course calendar—[HERE].

Key Clinical & Interdisciplinary Takeaways:

  • Meridians vs. Intramuscular Septa: Modern orthopedic acupuncture has mapped ancient meridian pathways straight to contemporary peripheral nerve courses [14:55]. High-level signaling and neural stimulation occur precisely within the fascial planes and intramuscular septa separating muscle groups [15:03].

  • Neuromuscular Re-Activation (Gluteal Inhibition Example): When a patient presents with inhibited gluteal firing, structural acupuncture can target the superior gluteal nerve pathway to trigger an involuntary muscular contraction [11:35]. This immediate peripheral signal maps directly back up to the central nervous system (CNS), resetting the motor control loop far faster than isolated exercise alone [11:57], [12:08].

  • The Neuro-Myofascial Intersection: Traditional Chinese Medicine’s Jingjin (channel sinews) shares a profound physiological overlap with Tom Myers' Anatomy Trains myofascial meridians [16:47]. Both paradigms recognize that isolated muscles do not move joints independently; the driving force is always coordinated systemic movement driven by the brain [17:34], [18:18].

  • The Art of Palpation as Brain Communication: True clinical healing requires moving past Googleable knowledge and honing the subtle, directional art of touch [20:54]. Skilled manual palpation acts as a direct line of mechanical communication with the patient’s central nervous system [18:45].

  • Acupuncture in Developmental Positions: A revolutionary frontier discussed by the panel is executing structural needling while positioning the patient inside dynamic developmental kinesiology positions (rather than standard static prone or supine alignment) to lock in motor control and neuro-stability [49:20], [49:54].

  • The Abundance Mindset in Patient Care: Clinicians must dismantle protectionist barriers or elitist "gatekeeping" regarding client management [36:00], [41:45]. True interdisciplinary care—where a physical therapist prepares the neuromuscular stability loop and an acupuncturist addresses local tissue down-regulation and inflammation—gets patients pain-free exponentially faster [22:52], [37:33].

  • Evolving Lifelong Mastery: Quoting the legendary physical therapist Dr. Vladimír Janda: "The day you stop learning is the day you die." [53:33]. Elite practitioners must remain secure enough to acknowledge what they don't know, keeping their clinical reasoning constantly curious and adaptable [03:44], [52:04].---
