From Dogma to “Anti-Guru”: Erson Religioso on What 20 Years of Manual Therapy Actually Taught Him
A Career Built on Changing His Mind
Most clinicians build a reputation by picking a lane and staying in it. Dr. Erson Religioso III did the opposite. On the latest episode of the Jetset Physical Therapy Podcast, hosts Jay and Randall sat down with Dr. E — founder of Modern Manual Therapy and Edge Mobility System — to talk about a career spent walking back his own certainty, and why that’s made him a better clinician, not a worse one.
The Placebo Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About
The conversation opens on uncomfortable ground: sham shockwave studies for tendinopathy, and what they reveal about how much of manual therapy’s effect is the therapy itself versus the ritual around it. Dr. E doesn’t use this to dismiss manual therapy — he uses it to reframe what’s actually happening in the room. Understanding the “transient window,” the brief period where manual input changes a patient’s pain experience, is different from believing you’re realigning tissue. One is defensible. The other isn’t.
Simplifying Instead of Specializing
A recurring theme is subtraction, not addition. Dr. E talks about blending McKenzie method and pain science into something simpler than either camp typically teaches on its own, and about the cognitive dissonance clinicians feel when they realize a technique they were trained to defend doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. His advice isn’t to abandon manual skills — it’s to stop overselling them to patients, and to use them as one entry point into empowering people to manage their own bodies.
This is also where Edge Mobility System comes from. Dr. E walks through the origin of the Edge tool and what makes a continuing education course worth a clinician’s time and money in the first place: not novelty, but material that changes what you do on Monday morning.
Where AI Actually Fits in the Clinic
The back half of the episode moves into more practical territory: how physical therapists can use AI tools day to day, from AI scribes to building recovery plans, without losing the parts of practice that depend on judgment and relationship. Dr. E’s take is pragmatic — AI is a way to buy back time for the parts of the job that actually require a clinician in the room, not a replacement for clinical reasoning.
Career, Mentorship, and Family
Dr. E closes the episode on lessons from mentoring other clinicians and running a business alongside a family life, a side of “building a career” that rarely makes it into CEU content but shapes almost everyone’s trajectory in this field.
